8 Classes Once a Week
Learn the FUNDAMENTALS of SIGN PAINTING and RULES TO LETTERING and LAYOUT.
Each week, ASPIRING HAND-PAINTED STUDENTS will build their skills starting from the ABSOLUTE BASICS of DRAWING LETTERFORMS, to CREATING A CUSTOM HAND-PAINTED SIGNAGE. Homework will be assigned throughout the week to assist in understanding the lessons taught during the class. No prior experience required.
All materials for the class included.

How did a former graffiti artist and pizza shop employee become one of the most sought-after Sign Painters in Los Angeles—with nearly 31,000 Instagram followers.
The answer: a mix of influential education, relentless dedication, and a natural talent for crafting beautiful hand-painted signage.
After high school, Alex Kurakake was working at a local pizza joint when a friend told him about the Sign Graphics program at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College. Curious, he sat in on a class and met instructor Ralph “Doc” Guthrie. That visit changed everything.
“I fell in love with that class,” Kurakake recalled. “I was excited to go back every day.”
His first marketable skill from the program was window splashing—a fast, bold style of painting store windows.”
After graduating, Kurakake launched Smart Alex Signs Hand-Painted Sign Company and began hustling door-to-door to find clients. It wasn’t easy.
“I was shut down a lot. It was very discouraging,” he said. “There were a handful of times I thought, ‘This isn’t going to work.’”
A milestone moment came in 2015 when Kurakake attended the Letterheads’ 40th Anniversary meet at the American Sign Museum in Cincinnati. There, founding member Mark Oatis chose him—out of hundreds of attendees—to be the last artist to use a 90-year-old mahl stick before it was retired to the museum.
“That was a big highlight of my career,” Kurakake said. “Out of all the people… it could have been anybody.”
Today, Kurakake is generous with his knowledge, paying forward the mentorship and guidance he once received.
“I’m grateful for that. I always think about passing [knowledge] on,” he said. “I don’t have to wait until I’m 70.”
