Master the Fundamentals of Hand-Painted Sign Work with 1st Semester 8-Week Sign Painting Course
Hand-painted signs offer a unique character and craftsmanship that mass-produced graphics cannot replicate. The 1st Semester 8-Week Sign Painting Course from SMART ALEX SIGNS, led by Alex Kurakake, LA Trade Tech Sign Alumni and Hand-Painted Sign Artist, teaches essential foundations including lettering, brushwork, control, composition, consistency, and confidence. Perfect for beginners or artists looking to strengthen their skills, this hands-on course builds a strong foundation in traditional sign painting.
LEARN THE VALUES OF THE FUNDAMENTALS OF SIGN PAINTING
Creating great hand-painted signs starts with mastering the fundamentals. The first semester introduces students to lettering, layout, spacing, basic brush strokes, paper signs, and other essential techniques, giving them a practical understanding of how individual elements come together to create balanced, well-designed hand-painted signs. These foundational skills provide a strong starting point students can continue building upon in future semesters.
Value # 1: Learn How to Draw Letters by Hand

Lettering is one of the fundamental skills in traditional sign painting. Students will practice working with different alphabets while learning about letter forms, proportions, spacing, consistency, and character relationships. These essential skills help students create clean, balanced, and professional hand-painted lettering as they continue developing their sign painting techniques.
Value # 2: Develop Basic Brush Stroke Techniques

A sign painter’s brush is one of the most important tools in the craft. Students will be introduced to fundamental brush strokes, movement, pressure, and control using Tempera Paint and Sable Brushes, which students will purchase after receiving the required materials list. Through hands-on practice, students will develop the brush control, consistency, and confidence needed to progress into more advanced sign-painting techniques.
Value # 3: Understand Layout Before You Paint

Students will discover why proper layout is a fundamental part of sign painting, learning how lettering, spacing, proportions, and composition work together to create a well-balanced and visually appealing design. This process teaches students to plan and organize their projects before picking up the brush, helping them approach each sign with greater purpose and precision.
Value # 4: Learn the Craft Through Paper Signs and Hands-On Practice

Traditional sign painting is about much more than applying paint to a finished surface. Through paper signs, hands-on exercises, and repeated practice, students develop essential skills in lettering, layout, composition, and brush control. These foundational techniques help students build confidence and craftsmanship they can continue developing well beyond the classroom.
Value # 5: Build Skills That Continue Into the Next Semesters

The 1st Semester serves as the prerequisite for the 2nd Semester, allowing students to continue advancing toward the 3rd Semester. Each semester is designed to build upon the skills learned in the previous level and is priced separately, providing a structured, step-by-step learning experience for students who want to develop a strong foundation in traditional hand-painted sign work.
Learn Traditional Sign Painting From an Experienced Sign Artist
Traditional sign painting is more than simply watching videos or reading about lettering techniques. It is a hands-on craft that requires practice, patience, brush control, letter construction, spacing, and an understanding of how each element comes together to create a well-painted sign.
Led by Alex Kurakake, LA Trade Tech Sign Alumni and Hand-Painted Sign Artist, this course gives students the opportunity to learn traditional hand-painted lettering through guided instruction and hands-on practice. Students can ask questions, practice techniques, improve their brushwork, and gain a deeper understanding of the skill and craftsmanship behind traditional hand-painted signs.
